Event Description:
Join us for our annual Earth Day Celebration and Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection! This free community event helps residents safely dispose of hazardous materials while celebrating ways to protect our environment.
Earth Day Activities
Enjoy a variety of educational activities and community resources:
• Free Tree Giveaway provided by the North Platte Natural Resources District (limited supply)
• Document Shredding hosted by Platte Valley Bank
(Personal documents only. Please remove metal fasteners, 3-ring binders, and spiral notebooks.)
• Well Water Testing provided by the Scottsbluff High School FFA Chapter
(Bring a small container of well water labeled with your last name to test for nitrates.)
• Gering Public Library Information Booth
• City of Gering Landfill Used Oil Collection
• City of Scottsbluff Residential Stormwater Management Information
Household Hazardous Waste Collection
Safely dispose of the following household items:
• Flammable liquids (gasoline, kerosene, paint thinners, antifreeze)
• Household, lawn, garden, and pool chemicals
• Mercury (liquid mercury, thermometers, switches/relays)
• Stains & varnishes (NO paint accepted)
• Fluorescent light bulbs
• Auto batteries
• Propane cylinders
Donations are appreciated to help offset event costs.
The estimated cost for the 2026 Household Hazardous Waste Collection is $47,771.69, so community donations help make this event possible.
Important Event Guidelines
This collection event is for residential materials only.
Please note:
• No trailer loads
• No commercial products
• No tires
• No pharmaceuticals
• No electronics
• No household batteries
• No paint
• No appliances or construction waste
Year-Round Disposal Options
• City of Scottsbluff Environmental Services accepts electronics, household batteries, and paint (in original containers) during business hours year-round.
Battery terminals must be taped.
• City of Gering Landfill accepts tires (for a fee) during business hours year-round.
